QED LAW

The following request for information was made to the University:

“For each of the foundation of legal knowledge / core law subjects taught on undergraduate programmes provided by the University:

(a) the average mark attained by students sitting the first examination in each subject in the academic year 2007/8.

Please provide the information based on the actual marks attained in the respective examinations and not on ‘compensated’ or ‘capped’ marks.

Please exclude data related to resit examinations taken at a laterexam. Where, for example, the first   examination was taken in May 2008 and there was a resit examination in August 2008 the average mark
should be based on the marks attained by all students taking the exam in May, whether or not they were sitting the examination for the first time or resitting. The marks attained by students in the August resit
should not be taken into account.

(b) the percentage of students attaining an examination mark of 40 or above in the first examination for each of the subjects in the academic year 2007/8

Again, as above, please base calculations on the actual marks attained and limited to the first examination.”

Bar Vocational Course (BVC) providers were asked for the following information in respect of years 1997/8 and 2007/8:

(a) The total number of the students enrolled on the university’s full time BVC;
(b) The number gaining an award of  ‘outstanding’ at the first attempt;
(c) The number gaining an award of ‘very competent’ at the first attempt;
(d) The number gaining an award of ‘competent’ at the first attempt;
(e) The number failing / failing to complete the course at the first attempt.

Based on the information provided, the table below shows, as a percentage of the total awards, the awards for each class in the years indicated.

Please note that the fail/failed to complete figures includes those who, at the date the information was provided, were either repeating or referred. These students are not technically classified by Nottingham Trent University as ‘non-completers’ – a category reserved by it for those who either failed or formally withdrew. For the purposes of this research, however, all students who did not pass (with or without commendation or distinction) are classed as failed/failed to complete.

Legal Practice Course (LPC) providers were asked for the following information in respect of years 1997/8 and 2007/8:

(a) The total number of the students enrolled on the university’s full time LPC;
(b) The number awarded a ‘pass’ at the first attempt;
(c) The number awarded a ‘distinction’ at the first attempt;
(d) The number awarded a ‘commendation’ at the first attempt;
(e) The number failing / failing to complete the course at the first attempt.

Based on the information provided, the table below shows, as a percentage of the total awards, the awards for each class in the years indicated.

Please note that the figures relate to the first exam attempts and so the fail/failed to complete figures includes all students who did not complete at the first attempt for any reason. It may include those who were entitled to resit some or all of their exams at a later sitting, those who deferred and those who withdrew from the course without taking the examinations.
